South Jesmond cycle route 2014 - This consultation has now ended

We have already done a lot to encourage cycling and want to improve on that by building safe cycling routes into and across the city.  We have been awarded £5.7m from the Department for Transport’s ‘Cycling City Ambition Fund’ to develop these routes and encourage more people to cycle.  This will not only benefit cyclists, but bring environmental improvements and health benefits for everyone and support a city wide road network fit for the future.
What this means for South Jesmond
We want to invest in the area, improving existing and creating new cycling facilities and other road improvements, on Brandling Park and on Clayton Road - between Brandling Park and Great North Road.  These facilities will form part of Strategic Route 4 (SR4), improving the existing cycle links between the city centre and to the north of Gosforth, through North and South Jesmond.  We also want to make other road improvements in the area that will benefit pedestrians.  There will be some short term disruption but this will lead to long term benefits for South Jesmond and the whole of the city.
Improvements include:
introducing new cycling facilities along Brandling Park and on Clayton Road between Brandling Park and Great North Road
  • resurfacing some roads and footpaths
  • replacing the two pedestrian islands on Clayton Road with a:
    • widened island on a road hump and;
    • Zebra crossing on a raised table (large road hump)
  • extending the existing 20mph speed limit west on Clayton Road, from Brandling Park to Great North Road
  • removal of around seven on-street charge parking bays on Brandling Park to make the road safer for all road users, particularly pedestrians and cyclists
  • narrowing and installing a raised table (large road hump) at Abbotsford Road / Brandling Park / Clayton Road and Brandling Park / Lambton Road junctions
As part of a rolling programme of Cycling City Ambition Fund works in the immediate area, we will also be carrying out:
widening and surfacing works on footpaths / cycle-tracks from Barras Bridge to Windsor Terrace Subway, and Great North Road north of Clayton Road
