North East Community Forest 2021 - Blakelaw Recreation Ground - This consultation has now ended

If you live in Newcastle then the North East Community Forest is your community forest! Supported by a partnership of local authorities, combined authorities, charities and organisations, including Newcastle City Council. This 30 year, multi-million pound project will see tens of thousands of trees planted, to benefit our local communities.
This coming winter we are going to be planting woodland across the city and want your views on the proposed locations identified near where you live. The tree planting would form part of the Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC), an initiative to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

Blakelaw Recreation Ground, Cragston Avenue, NE5 3TS
As part of the North East Community Forest we propose to work with volunteers and the community to help us plant trees at Blakelaw Recreation Ground in Blakelaw. The park, which is owned and managed by Newcastle City Council, is bounded by Ponteland Road to the east, Blakelaw Road to the south and Gorse Hill Way to the north. We believe planting trees in this park will bring a range of benefits to the local area, including: mitigating climate change, providing additional habitats for wildlife, and new areas of woodland for people to enjoy.

Where could trees be planted?
We have identified a number of potentially suitable locations for planting, with blocks of what could be small woodland individually numbered to make it easier for you to tell us your thoughts, whether for or against. Details of these areas are shown on the image here, and we've called them:
  • Woodland 1 – Planting to the south eastern boundary, adjacent to M&S Car Sales, BP and Diamond Hand Car Wash
  • Woodland 2 – Planting to the eastern boundary, adjacent to Ponteland Road
  • Woodland 3 - Planting to the north eastern boundary adjacent to Ponteland Road
  • Woodland 4 – Planting to the northern boundary, adjacent to Gorse Hill Way
You can see them on the site map here: Blakelaw Rec Planting Site Map

When would the trees be planted?
Planting will take place in the 2021/22 winter planting season (November 2021 to March 2022), with work most likely taking place in February 2022.

How big would the trees be?
The trees will be planted as ‘whip’ size (around 30cm or 12 inches tall), but they will grow into larger trees and form a woodland as they mature.

Safely storing your personal details
We are asking people to give us their postcodes so that we have an idea of where people who have taken part are living. If you do this, you cannot be identified from your postcode. We are also asking people to provide their contact details if they are interested in volunteering with us to help us plant trees or look after them, so that we can get in touch when any local woodland is to be created. If you choose to provide this, we will store this information separately to your responses. We will store it securely, we will not share it with anyone else, and we will not use it for any other purposes. If you provide personal information so that we can contact you about volunteering, you can always contact us to have us remove your information from our records at: northeastcommunityforest@newcastle.gov.uk or call: 0191 211 5612.

If you require this information in a different format, such as large print, or you have questions, please contact us at: northeastcommunityforest@newcastle.gov.uk or call: 0191 211 5612.

Thank you for taking the time to read these proposals and we look forward to your feedback.

Thank you to everyone who took part in our consultation on our plans for planting trees at Blakelaw Recreation Ground as part of the North East Community Forest. 53 people gave us their views, and for Blakelaw, the feedback resulted in the planting areas being changed in size to take account of two primary concerns people told us about:
  • Residents losing some of their view of the park from their homes. Woodland 'block 4' (at the northern boundary of the recreation ground, next to Gorse Hill Way) was reduced in size to address this.
  • Concern about possible anti-social behaviour in some areas, raised by residents and Northumbria Police. We decided not to plant on woodland 'block 1' for this reason.

Other things people told us included:
  • There will be replacement tree planting in three existing planting areas on the southern Blakelaw Road boundary, after residents expressed concerns that many of these trees which were previously planted in 2021 have since died. This time, the trees will be planted with spirals and canes for support, and there will be an ongoing maintenance programme.
  • Woodland 'block 3' will not be planted, as site visits and desktop surveys have shown that there are constraints on planting here due to underground services and utilities. Instead, heavy 'standard' trees will be planted near Ponteland Road after listening to residents' feedback that trees planted here will help reduce to carbon, capture air pollution, and make the area more visually appealing.
  • All new trees will have spirals and canes for protection after residents expressed concern that previous trees planted on the site lacked protection whilst they were establishing themselves.
  •  Residents raised concerns about ongoing maintenance, so all new tree planting will include an ongoing maintenance programme by the council's Grounds Maintenance team.
