Pharmacy Services in Newcastle 2022 - This consultation has now ended

Newcastle City Council would like to hear what you think of pharmacy services in your area to help us develop how these services are delivered in future. Pharmacy services include: 
  • dispensing medicines and medical appliances, such as blood pressure monitors
  • disposing of unwanted or spare medicines
  • advising people on how they can care for themselves and manage their medical conditions
  • providing advice on healthy living, such as Stop Smoking services
  • providing medicines and support when people have been discharged from hospital.

Your views will help inform the Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA) for the next three years. This is when we gather information to help us understand what the health needs are for people living in the Newcastle area, the level and accessibility of pharmacy services in Newcastle, and how these services can be maintained and developed in future to meet people’s needs. As part of this, we need to know what people think about their local pharmacies and the services they provide. 

This should take no longer than ten minutes of your time. You cannot be identified from your answers, and we will keep your answers private. Please be as open and honest as you can so we can identify areas which need improvement, and develop services for you. The final Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment will be published on the Council’s website: www.newcastle.gov.uk

Newcastle City Council would like to hear what you think of pharmacy services in your area to help us develop how these services are delivered in future.

Thank you to everyone who took part in this consultation on pharmacy services in Newcastle. The responses were both included in and helped to shape the latest Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment which will be published on Newcastle City Council’s website on 1 October 2022. The survey was live from 9 February – 9 April 2022, and we invited people to take part as follows: 
  • All registered members of Let’s Talk Newcastle (approximately 3400 people) were invited to take part in the consultation by email. 
  • Connected Voice, a Newcastle-based organisation offering advice and support to the voluntary and community sector, publicised the consultation to their members through their email bulletin in April 2022. 
  • A video of Newcastle City Council’s specialist pharmacy advisor explaining the consultation and encouraging people to take part was posted on Facebook and Twitter. The video reached 1600 people across the two platforms.
 
The consultation highlighted the following about the use of pharmacies in Newcastle 
  • Pharmacies are typically visited once every two weeks to once a month, for users to collect a prescription for themselves or someone else. Respondents were likely to use the same pharmacy each time. 
  • Over the counter items were most likely to be bought once a month. 
  • Weekdays between 9am and 6pm were the most common time to visit a pharmacy. 
  • Walking was the most common method of transport to get to a pharmacy, with the most popular travel time between 0 and 15 minutes. Proximity to home was considered the most important aspect of pharmacy location. 
  • 27% of respondents felt they could talk to a pharmacist about something private or sensitive. More than half of respondents said their pharmacy usually has a separate consultation room. 
  • 78% of respondents rate their local pharmacy services as ‘good’ or ‘very good’.
