We want to get your views on the proposed changes to our Council Tax Support Scheme for 2027-2028.
What's happening
We are consulting on changes to our Council Tax Support Scheme for 2027-2028, in particular, the following aspects of it:
- Increase the amount of savings a household can have and still get Council Tax Reduction.
- Give more support to people who have a limited capability for work and work-related activity awarded in their Universal Credit because of their health or a disability.
- Give more support to carers
- Give more support to families with disabled children.
- Introduce an exceptional hardship provision to help households facing severe financial difficulty.

Following the decision, the full results from the consultation will be available on our website: www.newcastle.gov.uk. Any new scheme will start on 1 April 2027. We will consider the impact of the scheme annually and consult again if it thinks further changes need to be made.
