Building Safety Group for High-Rise Residents

Do you live in a high-rise flat managed by Newcastle City Council? Are you interested in fire and building safety, and would you like to help make a difference? Our Building Safety Group gives residents living in high-rise buildings the opportunity to share their views and help shape how fire safety and building safety are managed. The group meets regularly to discuss fire safety measures, emergency arrangements, building safety responsibilities, and the steps we take to keep residents safe. It also provides an opportunity for residents to raise questions, share ideas, and help us improve our services. Your views can help make our high-rise buildings safer for everyone.

Keeping residents safe in our high-rise buildings is a top priority for everyone at Newcastle City Council. We want residents to have a say in how fire safety and building safety are managed and improved.
Listening to residents and acting on their views is important to us. Our Building Safety Group provides a regular opportunity for residents living in high-rise buildings to work with us, discuss safety matters, raise concerns, and help shape future improvements.

About the Group

The group meets every other month to discuss the work we do to keep residents safe in our high-rise buildings. This may include:
• Fire safety measures and procedures
 • Emergency planning and resident information
 • Building safety responsibilities and legal requirements
 • Discussing common concerns and questions
 • Reviewing how current safety measures are working
 • Sharing ideas and good practice
 • Helping us improve our building safety services

Meetings follow a clear agenda and are well organised, giving residents the opportunity to ask questions, share feedback, and hear about planned safety improvements.

Who is the Group for?

The group focuses on high-rise residential buildings that are over six floors (or 18 metres) high. We manage 39 buildings of this height across the city. Any resident living in one of these buildings is welcome to find out more about the group and how to get involved.

We can also provide support to help people take part, such as interpretation services or information in alternative formats.

Building Safety Group Meeting
Date: 22 April 2026

The Building Safety Group met at Pandon Court to discuss key building and fire safety matters affecting Newcastle City Council's high-rise residential buildings. Updates were provided on changes to the Building Safety Regulator, progress with building assessments, compartmentation surveys, and future inspection requirements. Residents also discussed fire safety engagement, including proposed annual fire drills and the importance of providing information in accessible formats.

The group reviewed new post-fire engagement procedures for different types of fire incidents and provided feedback on resident communications following a fire. Members highlighted the importance of reassurance, clear communication, and joint working with emergency services. The meeting concluded with a tour of the building's fire safety features and arrangements for future resident engagement activities.

Building Safety Group Meeting
Date: 15 July 2026

The Building Safety Group received an update on progress with Building Safety Regulator requirements, including applications for Building Assessment Certificates, compliance notices, and ongoing structural surveys, which confirmed that the high-rise buildings remain structurally robust. The group also discussed resident concerns relating to fly tipping, building security, corridor obstructions, and mobility scooters.

Members supported developing networking opportunities with other building safety groups and expressed interest in learning more about fire doors and building safety systems. Recruitment to the group was also discussed, with plans to target underrepresented buildings, update promotional materials, and increase awareness through community engagement activities. The meeting concluded with discussions on communal area safety, building improvement works, and agreed actions to support resident engagement and building safety priorities.
