Stop Smoking Service Survey 2025 - This consultation has now ended

Newcastle City Council's Stop Smoking service is due to be recommissioned in Autumn 2026. We want to hear your views about stop smoking services in Newcastle, and smoking in general, so we can shape a more accessible service for the city.

The Public Health team at Newcastle City Council are currently reviewing Stop Smoking services for Newcastle. and would like to hear the views and experiences of local residents. It is important that we collect a range of responses and feedback to ensure that we hear from a wide spread of voices across Newcastle. The first part of this is understanding how well the current services meet the needs of people who use them, and those who may use them in future. We are also holding discussions in community venues with both people who have previously used these services, and people who smoke tobacco at present.

Thank you very much for taking part in this survey.
We received 75 responses to this survey from members of the public and voluntary groups in Newcastle.
Our main findings were:
  • Cigarettes and rolling tobacco were the most commonly smoked tobacco products in Newcastle. Accessing the stop smoking service was the most commonly selected methods for how people quit tobacco smoking.
  • The survey highlighted the fundamental role flexibility and patient choice plays in helping people to stop smoking with ranges of stop smoking aids and approaches to support to meet the needs of individuals and their lifestyles.
  • Awareness of the current stop smoking service is limited with only 60% of respondents having prior knowledge of the service.
  • Over a quarter of respondents said they would use a nicotine vape to support them to quit tobacco smoking as they were labelled 'useful' but a third of respondents said they would not commenting that they are just another 'form of addiction' and people can 'become too addicted/get too dependent'.
