What we’re doing
Every three years, the Public Health team write a report called a Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA) on behalf of Newcastle’s Health and Wellbeing Board. The PNA explains:
- Where pharmacies are in Newcastle
- What services they offer now
- What services people might need in the future
The PNA helps decide:
- If current pharmacies can make changes
- If new pharmacies can open
What we would like you to do
We want to know what you think. Does the PNA show what pharmacy services in Newcastle are really like right now?
Key findings:
Key findings:
- There are 54 local pharmacies and one online-only pharmacy in Newcastle. These pharmacies help 307,565 people. That means there are 18 pharmacies for every 100,000 people. This is less than the average number in the rest of England.
- Since the last PNA was written in September 2022, seven community pharmacies have closed and one has opened in Newcastle.
- Some areas in Elswick, Kenton and Heaton now have fewer pharmacies. This means people may have to travel further to get to one.

This is the first version of this year’s PNA. This survey asks if you think the report shows what pharmacy services are really like in your area. We will use your answers to help finish the final report. We will share the final PNA on our website by 1 October 2025.
This survey is different from the last one. The last survey asked what you think about pharmacy services in Newcastle. We used those answers in PNA. This new survey asks if you think the PNA shows what pharmacies are really like in your area. You can fill in this survey until Saturday 26th July 2025.
