Wallsend Corridor Bus Service Improvement Plan 2026

Please give us your views on our proposals relating to the Byker Bridge and B1312/A193 roundabout areas.
Statutory Notice: We propose to -
(a) extend the bus lane on Byker Bridge westbound (nearside lane) – from its junction with the B1312/A193 roundabout to its junction with Crawhall Road,
(b) introduce a prohibition of right-hand turn restriction for all vehicles from Byker Bridge into Elizabeth Street,
(c) install pedestrian crossings at the following locations: 
     - a Toucan Crossing at Byker Bridge - approximately 15 metres east of the centreline of its junction with Elizabeth Street, and 
     - Puffin Crossings on the north, east, south and west arms of the junction of Shields Road West, Shields Road, Burton Street and the unnamed road to the north, and:
(d) reduce the speed limit from 40mph to 30mph on the approaches to the B1312/A193 roundabout, comprising of Byker Bridge, Burton Street, Shields Road Bypass and Byker Bank.
